Aug 23, 2013 What's up guys, welcome to djTLMtv, i'm DJ TLM and in this special Serato Scratch Live series i'll show you everything you need to know about my favorite digital vinyl system, Serato Scratch Live. The original and unrivaled vinyl emulation software for professional DJs. Scratch Live is vinyl emulation software that operates exclusively with Rane hardware. Mix and scratch digital music on your computer with Serato Control Vinyl or Control CDs. HRH Serato DJ Functional Shortcuts Hotkey Silicone Keyboard Cover Skin for MacBook Air 13,MacBook Pro13/15/17 (with or w/Out Retina Display, 2015 or Older Version)&Older iMac,USA and European Layout. Serato Video is a plug-in, which enables DJs to manipulate video playback with Serato DJ software Scratch Live and ITCH, is out now. Based on the popular Video-SL plug-in, Serato Video now gives ITCH DJs video mixing tools that Serato Scratch Live DJs have enjoyed for years, with the use of supported ITCH controllers.
So Serato has released Serato Scratch Live (SSL) 2.4.4, a maintenance upgrade to fix some bugs and glitches. Serato Scratch Live is for digital vinyl users of course, as opposed to Serato DJ which is for controller users, but what caught my attention is that in the publicity material, Serato is showing the software with the waveforms horizontally, not vertically.
Why is this significant? Because SSL was always by default presented with two vertical waveforms on the screen. But now, Serato is pushing the horizontal look for SSL, while at the same time Serato DJ is a big step towards the look and feel of SSL over its predecessor, Serato ITCH (like SSL, Serato DJ has counters in the “decks”, coloured cues on screen in the same place, a similar waveform view….). It all begs the question: When are the two softwares going to merge?
I don’t think anyone’s in any doubt that they are (Serato hinted as much in the original Serato DJ press release), but it definitely looks to me like the company is smoothing the way for this to happen now. So if the software becomes one, what will that mean for hardware and the exclusivity relationship between Rane and Serato when it comes to digital vinyl?
Will we see other manufacturers allowed to offer digital vinyl control of Serato software, or licensed to build scratch-compatible audio interfaces into their gear? I have no inside info on this, and so we’ll just have to wait and see… but whenever it comes, it’s my view that such a move will only strengthen Serato’s offering in the market – something the company has to do, of course, in the face of the ever-more unified (but different) message coming from its big rival, Traktor.
Is 2013 going to be all about consolidation?
With the flood of new controllers definitely slowing down, and manufacturers looking again at their product lines seemingly with the aim of simplifying them, consolidation seems to be the name of the game in 2013 – both within and between brands.
My view is that if this makes it easier for those who buy and use the gear to choose, it can only be a good thing. Because one of the paradoxes of digital DJing is that while it has put immense power into the hands of more potential DJs than ever before, it’s harder than ever to know where to start nowadays – something that I know from our mailbox is a huge pain point for many beginners.
• Watch this space from more consolidation news from the industry as and when we get it… 🙂

In Serato DJ, what is the difference between ABS, REL, and INT?
ABS stands for 'absolute' where the vinyl mimics real vinyl. Dropping the needle at the start of a record will cue the beginning of the track. Lift the needle and move it half way down the vinyl and you will go to mid-way through the track, just like real vinyl.
REL stands for 'relative' where the position you drop the needle on the record will cue to the relative position you are at in the track. Basically, you can drop the needle anywhere and it will start the track from the beginning, lift the needle and drop it half way down the vinyl and it will play from the same place in the song you lifted it from.
INT stands for 'internal' where all track control is performed by keyboard shortcuts or midi input. The control vinyl does nothing.
When I connect my vinyl turntables to my DS1, I hear a consistent hum. How do I fix this?
It is very important that when you connect your turntables to your DS1, you're connected correctly from your DJ mixer. Follow the following steps to correctly setup vinyl turntables with the DS1 and Serato.
- Connect your vinyl turntables LEFT and RIGHTRCA's to the LEFT and RIGHTINPUTS on your DS1.
- From your DS1, set your PHONO|CD switch to PHONO.
- Ground your turntables by either using your DJ mixers GND or DS1's GND.
- From your DJ mixer, connect the LEFT and RIGHTLINEINPUTS to your DS1's LEFT and RIGHTOUTPUTS. **Do not connect from your DJ mixers PHONOINPUTS.
- That's it!
Can I record directly in Serato DJ with the DS1?
No, not currently. There is no Aux Input featured inside the interface and the audio is mixed externally in a DJ mixer, not in the Serato DJ software. Because the final mix does not come through Serato or the DS1, the mix will need to be routed back into the computer before it can be recorded.
We've put together a guide to walk you through an easy method of recording your mixes using a free software called Audacity. See the guide below:
